I am not fond of AutoCAD crashes. Particularly since the autosave used to turn itself off, and I’m used to ordinary saving not doing its job either. Recovered okay this time, though.

If you’re not running Quadros in SLI why even do CAD?

I pulled an all nighter a few weeks ago on Solid works and the next day one of my toddlers got into my office, went right for the power button and powered down my workstation. All gone. I was a bit upset, mostly at myself for not saving the night before, but I was wiped out.

You wouldn’t happen to know anything about Vault would you?

we use vault at work.

I know it’s a pretty handy thing to have, but a pain to get set up.
I know that because we had to get IT involved, and we usually do everything CAD related ourselves.

our cad team had a meeting yesterday, two people said that having a single crash during the day was exceptionally rare and they can’t recall the last time it didn’t crash during a day.

A coworker uses Vault. I do not. Haven’t bothered to set it up.

Can confirm, am currently running 2018 on a particularly advanced potato:

I somehow got to the point where outright crashes have diminished, but within the last couple of months they “upgraded” me to 2019 (had been running 2013 despite having 2016 available), and the increased load has caused some lag and random dickery.

Hmmm o know who to run to when I need help then I need to set it up for our engineering team soon.

no stranger to random dickery here. i’ve gotten to work in rhino for the past week or two and it’s been

I ha ven’t had to muck about in CAD for a while. Right now I’m in report-generating hell. I have 105 site reports which need to be generated by Friday with a map location and various bits and bobbles coming out of the site analyses. This is usually a straightforward process, but this time it’s being complicated by sub-sites which have their own bits and bobbles which must be rolled into each of the reports. Total. Pain. In. The. Ass.

That’s not a good sign.

Ha tching is the worst for causing crashes.
![]() 03/20/2019 at 19:10 |

You are correct. “FLATTEN” is also a right bastard. This crash was neither - was precipitated by an automatic redraw after I edited some extra text in a dimension, in a drawing with mostly 2D elements in it. No obvious
reason, just “fuck you”.

I am a habitual saver, my manger was closing up a project and transferring all the files, till he got to my drive. “you have 6700 files” yeah thats me.

I’m at the point now where I start to get suspicious if ACAD hasn’t crashed in awhile... Like, what are you planning? You’re waiting until that deadline next week, aren’t you? you’re saving up for a nice, fat, juicy crash I bet.

The firm I work at moved up to 2019, and for the most part, it’s been pretty stable. (We’re using Civ3d, fwiw.) Many fu nctions seem to have sped up some, especially the layer pal ette. Have you seen that too?
![]() 03/21/2019 at 11:08 |
|
I might see speeding up if my computer weren’t a little older. One thing I’ve noticed is that the type-ahead/suggestions cause delays in receiving text more than they used to: typing RO to RO(tate) and hitting enter, it will stop paying attention while I’m typing “O” and then hitting enter will do a R(edraw) instead, same with M(ove) instead of MI(rror), and so on. Really, really irritating.
They also changed how MIRROR3D outlines its mirror plane, and it’s no longer possible to merely key enter for a new line in a dimension. And the lag and default to “buttonizing” the layers dialog makes it harder to switch objects between layers. Petty annoyances.

Petty annoyances are the bread and butter of the AutoDesk experience.

Autodesk is a hot garbage type of company. Inventor crashes with reckless abandon and has no real autosave function.

At least with AutoCAD you can at least sort of hear the animal rutting and mating of all the feral lisp functions in the undergrowth, as some fight to survive and bite the heads off of others...
By which I mean the primitiveness and cobbled nature leave you with some idea of what to expect.
